A new German-to-French translation of the Sonnets to Orpheus by Rainer Maria Rilke has been awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the translation category. The translator, a Paris-based scholar, spent seven years on the project, working from Rilke original manuscripts held in the Rilke Archive in Gernsbach. The jury praised the translation for preserving the musicality of the original while making the poems accessible to a new generation of French readers. The prize, one of the most important literary awards in the German-speaking world, recognizes achievements in fiction, non-fiction, and translation. The award ceremony took place as part of the Leipzig Book Fair opening programme.
